Chaitanya Bhosle 'Chin2'

AFTERNOON DESPATCH & COURIER
- 16th February 2000

He met his famous grandmother, at 23 after a pag of more than twenty years. But they are now fast friends. "I think she's brilliant. If she can still win prizes at MTV for her music, someone should learn marketing from her" says 25 - years- old Chaitanya Bhosle of his internationally renowned grandmother, Asha Bhosle.

Untill recently Chaitanya never had a chance to meet the Bhosle side of the family after his parents Hemant (Asha Bhosle's son) and Alka, split up in a bitter divorce. But as Chaitanya grew up he found that the Bhosle genes were too strong to be ignored. Drawn to music and theatre Chaitanya recently gave up a job in a leading advertising agency Lintas. He has now been selected to play the part of Che Guevara in Alyque Padamasee's 'Evita', for shows which present actor Dalip Tahil cannot fit into his busy schedule. Chaitanya's first shows as Che Guevara will be on Feb - 20th at the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium.

And what does his grandmother have to say his decision to exchange advertising for music? "She gave me a shout for giving up my job. She kept trying to impress on me how difficult things are nowadays". He recalls how he met his grandmother for the first time a few years ago, when he approached her after a show and introduced himself. "The first time I bought some of my grandmother's music was when she came out with her album 'Rahul and I'," he says.

Better known by his nickname "Chin2", Chaitanya is a radio jockey on AIR, 107.1FM and performs with his own band 'Oxygen'. "I hope to sing with my grandmother some day," he smiles.

Rising Son

MEET Chaitanya Bhosle, or "Chin2" as he likes to call himself! Though given his lineage-he is Asha Bhosle's grandson - he should capitalise on his name. And yet there is no getting away from who he is: a singer - "Singing is my soul." From Feb-20th, the 25 years old will fill in to Dalip Tahil's shoes as Che Guevara, in Alyque Padasee's Evita. A temporary replacement, this Commerce graduate is thrilled. He had quit his job with Lintas to make music - a performance at Not Just Jazz by the bay, a few advertising jingles and radio jockeying followed. Stints with theatre have included roles in Madhulika Verma's the Big A, SOS and The Witness and Janak Torpani's Keely and du. On the anvil are Bharat Dhadolkar's A Funny Thing Called Love and Till Midnight Falls. Next? " No plans! Things have this way falling in place. I am working on my music album which some day will bring to you the spirit of this Banjara!"

THE TIMES OF INDIA (BOMBAY TIMES) - Feb-21 2000

He is bubbly and talks nineteen-a-dozen. He is 25 years old CHAITANYA BHOSLE (Chin2 for short) - singer, actor, composer and compere all rolled into one. Well so another chirpy, cute youngster with oodles of talent coming to the limelight... Yes, but this radio jockey on AIR, 107.1 FM also has music in his genes. He happens to be legendary Asha Bhosle's grandson. Chaitanya gained accolades as an intense and mature actor for his role as an AIDS victim in The Big A (a musical on AIDS). A postgraduate in Management Studies from NMIMS (Mumbai) and a Client Servicing executive in Ammirati Puris Lintas, Chin2 had left the world of white collared executives a while ago in order to pursue music which he calls "the soul of life". Soon, apart from performing with his band called 'Oxygen' at Not just Jazz by the Bay, The Club, etc this youngster had composed jingles for companies, advertising agencies etc. And then on, naturally there was no looking back. With such a repertoire, Chin2 is venturing into composing his own untitled album, one that deals with a banjaran(gypsy) theme.

Now there is - the lady's grandson, Chaitanya, is making a mark as a singer-actor, in the play, for a show over the weekend. Guess whose parts he's clinched- Dalip Tahil's role as Che Guevara (The actor is away shooting, hence the replacement). So what else does Chaitanya or Chin2 do? He's a radio jockey, comperes the Bombay Gymkhana Karaoke Night performs with his band Oxygen, composes jingles...Whew! Lots of talent here, you'll agree.

THE BIG BRAKE

Sure he’s Asha Bhosle’s grandson. But Chaitanya Bhosle's not cashing in on that. The 25-year old former Lintas executive has replaced Dalip Tahil as Che Guevara in Alyque Padmasee's Evita. He's been a radio jocky, performed with his band Oxygen, composed jingles, even acted in small plays. But this one's The Big Break. Says mama, Alka Dabolkar : "He wants to make it on his own his own merit. He wants to grow beyond the tag he carries with him." No better way to do it.
