SAKHARAM BINDER at the 12th Nehru Theatre Festival...
MTG editorial
Om Katare’s theatre company Yatri will stage its opening show of Vijay Tendulkar’s SAKHARAM BINDER in Hindi at the 12th Nehru theatre festival in Mumbai. Yatri had earlier produced the play in 1985 under the direction of Sulbha Deshpande. After 23 years, Yatri is once again producing it for the Nehru theatre festival.
Date: 12th August 2008. Time: 7.30 pm.
SAKHARAM BINDER, which created a controversy when it was first staged remains one of Tendulkar’s best known plays. Initially the play was banned by the Govt. of Maharashtra. A court case followed. Later the case was withdrawn and the play was allowed to be staged. Needless to say it was a huge hit thereafter.
In this play Vijay Tendulkar dared to expose the double standards in our society, which prevail under the guise of elite intellectualism. He had no qualms about exposing the frailties of human nature, which are embodied in his characters – be it the docile but full of native cunning, Laxmi, the bold Champa or the debauched Sakharam.
The play was first performed in the 70’s by eminent Marathi actor Neelu Phule and was directed by Kamalakar Sarang. In the 80’s, it was produced by Pt. Satyadev Dubey and was directed by Sulbha Deshpande (in Hindi) with the late Amrish Puri as Sakharam.
