Theatre, like Nature, half reveals and half conceals the soul within. Working Title is thankful that it has been able to perform plays that have expanded its world-view. And yet, it feels there is much more for to do...
The group feels that it can do with "things that are languishing for lack of use...then there are those who profess to favour freedom and yet deprecate agitation, like men who want crops without ploughing the ground".
For Working Title, Vincent Van Gogh's quote holds the truth: "If you hear a voice within you say, 'you cannot paint', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced". Working Title is as such trying to paint.
An eclectic and a young English Theatre group, Working Title has to its credit, productions such as Curfew, Mahadevbhai (1892-1942) and the recently opened 3, Sakina Manzil, amongst others.
All these productions deserve the merit of carving a definable space known as Indian English Theatre. Further, these productions have been guided by the spirit of inquiry, by questioning accepted norms and ideals, by theatrical forms that are playful and imaginative and by language that is at once telling and compelling.
Productions such as Mahadevbhai... are indeed rare and memorable. While a lot of credit is due to writer and director, Ramu Ramanathan who has penned and directed most of the plays for the group so far, Jaimini Pathak, the group's core actor is a commendable performer. In short, this is theatre at its best- at most times at least!
