APARAJITA is a story of a battered woman who has been driven away from her house by her promiscuous husband. She has taken shelter in her brother’s house and has been entrusted with the task of looking after her young nephew.
At the start of the play she is eagerly awaiting an important phone call, which she thinks will change the course of her otherwise dependent life. While waiting for the phone call, aparajita reveals her life story by portraying various people in her life.
Having had not much of a formal education she has to fall back upon her latent talent, that of a performing artiste. Not groomed for singing, she opts to become an actress and eagerly awaits a phone call from Sanjeevdada, her brother’s once radical friend who has promised to give her a position in one of the professional theatre companies. But that promise comes with a price that could well compromise Aparajita’s dignity in the bargain.
The British Academy Award winning actress Rohini Hattangady plays Aparajita and several minor characters. The play has been translated from the original Bengali by Tara Pandit.
