The literal translation of this rustically titled Marathi play would be SHE, HER HUSBAND AND THE MEDDLING MIDDLE GUY. If we have to find a British equivalent to a play of this sort, think of the Restoration comedies written by Wycherley and company in the 17th century whose plays inevitably dealt with cuckoldry.
So in short, this is one of those classic themes that are part of our collective psyche and trite as it may be, it is exploited to its optimum by popular media in all its forms. Closer home, our very own commercial Hindi cinema has manufactured equally cheesy titles such as Pati, Patni Aur Woh
Rest assured, this Marathi play too will find its desired audience. Its characters are from a community and class of people found near Kolhapur so that explains the Marathi dialect that informs the title of the play.
The woman’s husband in the play is away for days together because of his work and the second man therefore seems a plausible enough distraction for the wife. The problem is that while this man truly loves the woman, for her it is just a passing phase.
Further drama comes in the form of the husband unwittingly recruiting a man to murder him! In the end of course things are sorted out. If there is any moral underpinning to this triangular love story, it is don’t get too messed up with the affairs between a husband and wife. You can be a voyeur but keep your distance!
