Please do not be taken in by what the brochure of this performance tells you. It is not a play, but more of a one-man show, with nothing but bawdy jokes and no script whatsoever. The brochure will also claim that the themes are a comment on our politics, films, media and the likes of it. However, one will find nothing but stale Parsi jokes which will make you laugh for the first 20 minutes of the show and then simply put you to sleep. A complete disappointment is how I would define CYRUSITIS. Why does Cyrus Broacha or the producers and promoters of the show think that crude jokes and statements would make audiences like their show? It eludes me completely.
The entire act felt more or less like a funny version of a sex lecture with Cyrus doing all the talking about the same. Hasn't he already spoken all there is to speak about the topic on his many shows on MTV and in his other performances? Apparently the topic fascinates him no end. But I will give him this much credit that some of his jokes about Mayawati were quite funny. That is what the brochure must have meant by political commentary. Also the beginning of the show with the news reporter was good enough. But why would anyone want to waste their time and money to watch Mayawati ridiculed when they can see the same thing on their television sets, is again beyond me.
Cyrus was his usual quirky self. But his charming personality in this case was not enough to fool the audience. Kunal Vijayakar was the only silver lining in the act. He was witty as well as funny and he at least tried to put an element of performance in the act by introducing the different characters he played. His performances ranged from being Lata Mangashekar to the sexpert from our dailies. He was magnificent in all the roles.
But you're not going to gain anything more from Cyrus than what you would if you see him on MTV. At least you have the option of turning your television off.
