Brilliant lighting and witty dialogues are the two stars in this play. It would be a better watch if it had been supported by a strong script as well. Makrand Deshpande tries to explore the fear of dying, while touching upon subjects like reality television and the way it has become a part of our everyday lives. A dramatic representation about the helplessness of a man who knows that his parents are soon to meet their end, and who therefore wants to make their death ‘beautiful’.
The characters ranging from a struggling lady actor to a nymphomaniac uncle adorn the stage with amusing lines and incidents, which make it an interesting watch. Conversations between Divya Jagdale, playing the role of ‘Maa’ and Nagesh Bhosle as ‘Papa’ are simply delightful. Deshpande has managed to capture the nuances and the charm of the everyday repartee between old couples.
However the length of the play reduces the impact that it could have had. Dialogues should have been kept short and sweet. Prolonged conversations could have been better managed. As such the significance of the topic being discussed loses its momentum. It also creates vagueness.
Miss Beautiful- Ahlam Khan enters with a bang, but soon loses that force as the play proceeds. Her expression seemed fixed on her face after sometime, leaving a lot of scope for improvement in her performance. Anand Karak is brilliant as an old friend of Nagesh Bhosle’s Papa. Right from his mocking English accent to his crouched back, he has imbibed the shades of his character beautifully.
Divya Jagdale and Nagesh Bhosle made their respective characters come alive on stage and in the hearts of the audience as well. Makrand Deshpande although a little too casual was good as Shirish, the son in the play. Vineet Sharma was good in his cameo too.
The music by Akshay Oberoi was used to convey the emotions of the characters. At times though it seemed to overshadow the actors. As I said before, the real star in the play was the light design. In simple words, it was brilliant and magnificent. The set too created the right ambience and set the mood for the play. Both have been designed by Dhanendra Kawade. So for all those who want to watch complete masala theatre, and are ready to sit for a long time in their seats should go for this one.
