The prominent new Hindi release of the week, Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmaan Khurrana and Kriti Sanon starrer, BAREILLY KI BARFI, embarked on a fair start of around 20 percent on an average, which was always going to be case. The start is all the more creditable as it comes in the wake of a strong opposition, the still hot, one week old Akshay Kumar venture, TOILET-EK PREM KATHA.
At a very rough estimate, the first day appears to be around the 2.50 crore mark, give or take 50 lakhs.
The two things in favour of BARFI are the reasonably positive feedback & reviews and a controlled budget (14-15 crore raw), and even a half decent weekend should help the cause of the film further.
The other major release, Gurinder Chadha’s PARITION: 1947 (dubbed) saw a surprisingly low start (below 5 percent) and is unlikely to make a mark at the Indian box-office.
There is a third film too, VIP 2 LALKAR (dubbed), featuring the once top actress Kajol and Dhanush, but unfortunately it managed dismal collections, wherever it released.
Meanwhile, Neeraj Pandey’s Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer, TOILET-EK PREM KATHA, managed a great opening week, netting 95 crore (to be validated), which is a splendid performance. The film has also entered the second weekend on a strong note and is sure to end up as a super hit, if not a blockbuster.
Concluding with Imtiaz Ali’s SRK-Anushka starrer, JAB HARRY MET SEJAL, the film crashed badly in the second week, adding just 5 crore, thus netting 65 crore (to be validated) in two weeks from India and is a box-office disaster. JAB HARRY MET SEJAL is better in the overseas as it will end up grossing around $10m, in the end count, but that is hardly anything to cheer about.
