Bollywood is a male dominated industry so whenever our filmmakers make a women centric film it gets us excited as it’s a refreshing change that more and more films are made where the heroine is the protagonist and not just a mere eye candy.
At the trailer launch of Kangana Ranaut’s SIMRAN, the director was asked if having a star like Kangana in a women centric film makes it easy for the makers to find producers, Hansal replied, “Absolutely having a solid narrative and a star like Kangana makes it bit easy to raise the money but at the same time I would not ask somebody to play character if the star is not apt for that specific character. She is a lethal combination of a fantastic actor and great looks and my producers were generous enough to support our conviction. In this film people will get to see a man in the context of a woman which is generally the other way round.”
When we asked co-producer Amit Agarwal about what excited him to take up this project, he replied, “It’s a great association as it has Hansal bhai as the director and Kangana the terrific actor that she is as the protagonist.”
We further asked him if he agrees with the comment that women centric films struggle to find producers in Bollywood to which he replied, “No I don’t think its correct anymore, or else a SIMRAN wouldn’t have happened. Now-a-days there’s an audience for all kind of subject including women centric films. Moreover, if a subject is backed by a brilliant combo of Kangana Ranaut & Hansal Mehta getting a producer should not be a problem at all.”
Well it’s really a very encouraging and refreshing change to see that Bollywood these days is earnestly trying to tell different stories and make meaningful movies.
Directed by Hansal Mehta, SIMRAN is co-produced by Bhushan Kumar, Shailesh Singh and Amit Agarwal. The film will hit the silver screens on September 15.
