Happy Birthday SRK: Ab Yaha Se Kaha Jaye Hum…

Happy Birthday Dear SRK,

All duas, love and happiness for you as you turn 52.

The party has just begun, Gauri, Suhana and AbRam are there at your farmhouse in Alibaug, You blew out 52 candles at midnight yesterday. For your BFF Karan Johar and admires like Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, the Arora sisters - Malaika and Amrita, plus the current heartthrobs Sidharth Malhotra etc, the fun has already began making the world jealous.

I am just another fan (not that JABRA one so relaxed) turned journalist who is awed by your achievement as the ‘outsider’ who has set a big example and your journey is an inspiration to millions, your attitude has always been your key to success with quotes like ‘you never win a silver, you lose the gold’ you made the MTV drunk generation like me take a serious note of you and value the precious feeling called ‘winning’..

You are the center point of the Khan trinity that is ruling Bollywood since decades now, certainly not better than the Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand trinity but surely the one which is living a longer life then the Kapoor, Kumar, Anand one, you as the bike-riding lover boy of DEEWANA (1992) with that TV popularity working as a replacement of no filmy connections’ with that unbeatable energy, unique body language and stumbling dialogue delivery, you made yourself remain rock steady.

At that time you cherished the grey area with BAAZIGAR, DARR, ANJAAM while your contemporaries – Aamir and Salman preferred to be the good boys. Then one day DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE happened. DDLJ it is called in short and to cut the story short, the actor in KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA, YES BOSS, RAJU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN became Raj – the one who wants to be loved by everyone – the actress, the family of the actress, friends, fans, everyone. The icon of cross culture NRI value of ‘rich’ traditions amongst ‘rich’ and wannabe rich Indians and NRI’s got typecast as the poster boy of candy gloss sagas by Chopra and Johar.

Your irresistible charm, your spread of arms and the tilted nod like Rajesh Khanna made the industry write pannas (pages) on your ability to infuse romantic feeling in anyone.. even a stone.. when the world started saying Raj in DDLJ was the best thing that can happen to you, came SWADESH and CHAK DE! my goodness, the highly motivational sports flick even make haters turn around and the scene during the climax when you react after that winning goal is scored is speechless..

And we waited… I remember the press screening of BILLU, you walked into the press show, a fellow colleague handed you a copy of a magazine whose cover bore another celebrity not you. I remember you smirked and winked saying, “I think all magazines should have me on the cover.” The attitude of winning gold (read No.1) and not basking on the laurels of silver (no. 2) had started showing signs of getting lost in the maze and craze to be the winner No.1 always.

You failed to identify the cinema of substance that can realize your true potential and things like the remake of DON etc started happening. The occasional Suri from RAB NE BANA DI JODI was another message but you continued till you mocked yourself in CHENNAI EXPRESS.. and achieved the much needed success.

Still a CHAK DE or SWADES was waiting and you got trapped completely as Raj of different ages in DILWALE, JAB HARRY MET SEJAL.

Does this affect you King Khan, have you lost your charm, will the BADSHAH regain his crown? is the only question. Raj is immortal and to instigate that belief, we need someone like Kabir Khan from you on screen again and again. India’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna digged his own grave by repeating himself and I don’t want that thing to happen to you. Pardon me for my limited understanding, King Khan’s charisma may be beyond the parameters of my understandings.

But, you have a ‘brahmastra’ (a secret weapon) in that upcoming Aanand L Rai flick where you play a dwarf and am sure you will stand tall of all.. Fingers crossed. But that time will tell.

Right now, Dear Shah Rukh Khan, you have come so far.. a line from the iconic number from your iconic film DDLJ goes like ‘Ab Yaha Se Kaha Jaye Hum’ (rough translation – from here to where).. kya ‘Raj’ ban kar hi reh jaye hum (should I remain ‘Raj’ forever).

Happy Birthday SRK,

With Love forever
