As the world is going gaga over Aamir Khan’s latest inspirational SECRET SUPERSTAR which got it trailer released yesterday. We have found that Aamir Khan’s touted motivational film starring Zaira Wasim (the young Geeta Phogat from DANGAL) has its basic idea inspired from a Hollywood comedy. Read on.
It seems the ‘idea’ may be inspired from Bill Murray’s 2015 starrer ROCK THE KASBAH. The Hollywood comedy directed by Barry Levinson is about a rock band manager Richie Lanz (Bill Murray) who discovers a young girl named Salima with gifted singing talents during his bad times in Kabul and grooms her to win Afghanistan's music talent contest.
Interestingly, this Hollywood dud has borrowed the central idea from the brilliant 2009 award winning documentary AFGHAN STAR by Havana Marking. The documentary traces the story of Hameed Sakhizada, Setara Hussainzada, Rafi Naabzada, and Lema Sahar – the four contestants appearing in the third season of the Afghan reality show. The contestants become national celebrities and Setara Hussainzada one of the two women contestants created a stir during her farewell performance where she danced freely without her hijab, the movie was a surprise introduction to the pop culture side of liberated Afghanistan.
SECRET SUPERSTAR written and directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao features Zaira Wasim playing a talented singer fighting a rigid conservative father. She posts her singing videos online and draws the attention of an ageing rock star played by Aamir Khan who mentors her to follow her dreams.
