Should reality show judges display their preferences?
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
The battle line for JHALAK DIKHLA JA has been drawn and the gutsy hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi has not been able to make it to the final three. On the eve of signing off from the show, Negi has raised an issue whether the judges should disclose their preferences in a reality show? The question was aimed at Shiamak Davar who in one of the episodes, after Sudha Chandran had bowed out had implored on the voting public to vote for Sandhya Mridul and Sandhya was also one of the finalists. The contention of Shiamak in saying so was that he did not want the talented dancers to be voted out and those having lesser talent running into the last leg of the programme.
Was that to be so, what was the need for picking up a rank outsider like Negi to pick up the show, was the question that was asked by the well-wishers of Negi for which Shiamak had no answer. As a sports person this must have rankled Negi who is a firm believer in fairness of the game.
Was it right on the part of Shiamak to do so? Judges have been fighting amongst themselves and have been advocating for their candidates in various music realty shows be it Amul Voice of India or Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, and in Amul Voice of India the acrimony had reached a stage where Abhijit and Alka Yagnik had decided to stage a walk out. For music shows this time around the acrimony could have been anticipated as judges they had picked up their protégées and they were pushing them for the trophy. So besides the contestants the judges also had become contestants by proxy.
But for a dance show to happen like this where there were no such choices to be exercised would have rattled Negi. Shiamak's view may have stemmed from the fact that he saw a Mika having a longer run than a Tapur Chaterrji inspite of the fact that she was a better dancer, and Shiamak being an aficionado of dance would have desired to let the dance triumph and hence his request.
Negi's contention was that there might be thousands of fans who may like him, he would not have the same fan following which a Shiamak Davar has and Shiamak's fan can always exercise a preference for Mridul over him. Now that the damage has been done, Negi could have used the emotional underpinning to get selected to the finals by announcing to the public that he wants to utilize the prize money to build an academy for hockey in the memory of his son who left this world at a tender age of nineteen years. Had this been done, then nobody could have been able to out vote Negi. Even then, for the cause of hockey, now that the Negis have expressed their dreams somebody would come forward to help them realize their dreams, and in doing so the entry of Negi into this competition would have served its purpose.
