Budget Time And Demands

It is that time of the year when various industries prepare their wish list to seek sops from the government during the budget for expansion and diversification of their respective industries. Film industry however has not been advocating for its cause with the same intensity and lobbying with the government to eek out for itself concessions from the government for expansion of the industry.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry however has done a yeomen service to the cause of the industry wherein it has advocated in its wish list for the industry that it may be accorded tax holidays for the next five years, to facilitate transmission of the prints of films in a digitized format. This would facilitate the industry to revolutionize the manner in which the films are viewed in the country.

The biggest benefit that will accrue out of this, if the government agrees to accord tax holiday for the industry to switch over to digitized form of film transmission would be that the piracy of films would be controlled to a great extent. This is owing to the fact that the films in the digitized format have a secret code that is embedded into the reels and when the pirated version of the films come out, it would be very easy to detect the source from which the film has been copied, as it is a hologram which is not possible to remove from the reel, apart from the increase in quality of the output. For the government, it would mean increased revenue in the form of Entertainment tax, which otherwise is relegated to a fewer number of films, as piracy rules the roost.

If the industry is able to get this concession it would be able to release as many prints as it can on the very first day itself all over the country through the satellites in an encrypted format. For the movie crazy public country, if they are able to see the movie on the same day all across the country, instead of metropolitan cities as is the trend now, it would facilitate in quantum jump in revenues for the industry. The industry once it gets the concession can go in for technological tie-ups all across the country to make the cinema viewing a real delight. The investments that it would spawn in its wake all across the country would have a multiplier effect on the development quotient in nearly all the cities.

After all, movie viewing is still the favorite leisure activity for all of us, and if it is made enthralling it would mean a win-win situation for all the concerned, be it the government or the industry and the movie viewing public thank all the concerned for making the movie experience an experience of the lifetime. It is incumbent on the part of the government and the industry as if it has to get out the people from the houses and move to cinema halls, then it has to captivating and has to be an experience which has not been there in the past.
