PARTNER: Can it signal a new beginning for new partners
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
At the recently held IIFA Awards in London Govinda and Salman Khan were able to set the stage on fire and showed that they can hit it out as a new pair of Indian comedy scene. PARTNER when it is going to be released is going to be an acid test for all the three of the main protagonists i.e. Salman Khan, Govinda and David Dhawan. They had had a rather lean patch for quite a long time.
Comedy as a genre has been successful owing to the chemistry of the involved partners. The series HERA PHERI which is already in its third run in a different avatar is an ample testimony to the fact that comedy succeeds only when a pair is involved and they are able to develop a fantastic chemistry on the screen.
Govinda has a fantastic sense of timing for comedy, so has Salman Khan, and David Dhawan at one point of time was considered a veteran of comedy till the time he left the pairing between the stars and started solo comedy shows with Govinda. When this happened David Dhawan started losing the elfin charm. AANKHEIN is still the best comedy film that David Dhawan directed and the film in which Chunky acted. It indeed is surprising why David Dhawan did not do a repetitive encore with this pair subsequent to AANKHEIN.
Salman Khan still has to give a performance of the kind that he gave in ANDAAZ APNA APNA. It is one of the best performances that Salman Khan has given till date. After that Salman Khan gave some performances, as a comedian but it could not match the timing that he had developed with Aamir Khan. Salman Khan seemed after that to subconsciously cultivate the image of a lover boy more consideration, than developing the gift of gab that he has been blessed with. Even a film like HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM Salman was able to hold the forte because of the timing of his comedy.
The pairing that happens between actors for comedy is more so in the case in which the actors who have been paired are not on the same keel. Munna Bhai and Circuit, Govinda and Chunky, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal etc., are live examples of these kinds. On the other hand when the stars are of the same stature and develop the mark as a pair of comedy, the sequel does not follow through, as the stature for prominence could become the Achilles heel.
With the kind of legacy that all these three main players are having, and the fact that they are searching for that elusive hit, may provide the common binding element to prolong this affair further. There still is a dearth of comedy of timing and these are the three players whose names emerge into mind if one wants to have a good time fun. May be, when PARTNER releases and sets the jingle at box office, it may force these three to sit together and take a stock of the situation.
