4K DI for SIVAJI – First time in Indian
Bollywood Trade News Network
Prasad EFX, one of the largest Digital Post Production Studios in India has color graded and digitally post produced the Rajnikanth starrer, AVM’s SIVAJI completely in the 4K digital pipeline.
2K resolution for DI is the standard in India. Even in Hollywood only the mega budget films are scanned in 4K resolution. Scanning an entire feature film in 4K resolution requires huge computing power, storage space and powerful graphics capability. A single frame scanned in 2K occupies 12 mb space and a 4K image would occupy 4 times more (48 mb). An idea of the huge storage space can be worked out if one understands that just 1 second of a movie has 24 such frames. For these reasons scanning in 4K for an entire DI feature film has never been done in India till now.
Prasad EFX, taking into view the excellent imagery that has been cinematographed by Mr. K V Anand for SIVAJI, felt that 4K would do justice in enhancing the digital image quality and flexibility in color grading. Producers of SIVAJI, AVM immediately understood the advantage and took the bold step of approving the higher cost and longer time factor involved in working with the larger resolution images. “By routing the entire film through the 4K pipeline for the DI process we can be certain that none of the details available in the celluloid film are lost”. Says Madhu of Prasad EFX. “Another advantage is that when we can scale up the images during the post and graphics processes the image will not go soft or lead to any artifacts. As a 4K image has larger resolution we can also have unlimited freedom in manipulating the colors during grading.” The entire 4K Digital Intermediate process was executed in Prasad EFX’s Chennai facility using high end scanners, film recorders and color grading suites. Prasad EFX, Chennai simultaneously worked on close to 85% of the VFX (Graphics) in SIVAJI, also in the 4K resolution. The Tamil version release prints were done at Prasad Film Laboratories.
K V Anand, one of the leading cinematographers in India expressed his happiness that such a complicated 4K project has been executed to his complete satisfaction with professional efficiency.
Director Shankar, who has consistently delivered mega blockbusters, has been extremely satisfied with the excellent VFX and Color Grading of SIVAJI in the 4K pipeline.
In the recent past Prasad EFX, has worked on the DI and Color Grading of mega movies including KRRISH and RANG DE BASANTI and have also upgraded their Digital Intermediate facility in Mumbai by providing a digital theatrical projection system using the high end Barco Projector D-Cine Premiere DP100. The 26 ft x 40 ft theatre is located in the Prasad EFX facility at Andheri West, Mumbai and is also equipped with 5.1 surround sound.
Till now digital grading in India has been done on a small monitor or a low-end projector & screen. But in the major studios in Hollywood they provide the real theatre experience allowing the cinematographer to see the image being graded in high resolution on the big screen. This allows very detailed attention to selectively color grade smaller areas in a frame or shot. The meticulously color calibrated environment ensures that what the cinematographers see in the new facility is what is actually seen in the cinema theatres.
