A film based on the theme of boxing, GHAYAL, had given a new lease of life and a new identity to the elder brother Sunny Deol, and may be when Bobby Deol enters in the boxing ring through APNE he could also get a much needed catalyst to his career, and a new identity for himself as well.

Be it Hollywood or Bollywood, boxing has given a new lease of life to stars who were just bumbling along in a career, or were not having an oeuvre of super hit movies in their repertoire. The whole experience of viewing boxing on cinema makes it enthralling. The feeling that it is able to register in the mind of the audience is to be seen to be believed. Sylvester Stallone is the most celebrated example of this kind who with his ROCKY series has been bouncing back with a new vigor every time he has just started slipping from the memory of the public. Precisely so, even a Clint Eastwood, with a MILLION DOLLAR BABY swept the Oscars, and gave his career a new lease of life.

Actors who otherwise are having a lean patch to revive the sagging career, in the form of producing the film, have used boxing as a veritable tool. Dev Anand started this trend when he made JOHNY MERA NAAM, which was an all in-house effort being produced by Dev Anand and directed by Vijay Anand. Mithun Chakraborty did the same with BOXER and so did Sunny Deol when he made GHAYAL. Sunny Deol carried on this legacy with a passion in nearly all of his subsequent films, but more eloquently as an encore in GHATAK.

Interestingly enough, while Dharmendra also established himself as a macho star and an action hero, he never was given an opportunity to enter in the ring, and may be with APNE he also gets to play the role of a boxer. Even an AB had done the same with NASEEB and it had given a new lease of life to his career, the only difference being that the arena of boxing was street.

As a sport, boxing has emerged as the preferred choice by the heroes trying to make a come back guided by the psyche, which operates boxing. Boxing is a triumph of individual against the villain, as also is a manifestation of outburst of the individual against the system as well. Besides, the heroine of the film has a first hand feel. This is also precisely the reason that films on boxing have been rather successful at the box office than those where boxing in the form of street fight has been introduced, NASEEB of Amitabh Bachchan being probably the sole exception. This could be owing to the fact that this was the first time when AB was emerging into a ring, that too in a street ring, which does not have any rules.

Off-late boxing has started being associated with a certain kind of machismo in the persona of the star, as such every other hero is not to be seen in the role of a boxer, and hence the boxer-heroes are few in number. May be, with APNE one more boxer hero would join the league. Fist fighting otherwise has been the trademark of all the heroes of the industry, but the authenticity that is added to the persona is on account of the role of boxer acted with panache. Sunny
Deol's dialogue of his hand when hitting an individual lifts him off this nether world, adds conviction to his fighting, and so one should presume it would happen with Bobby Deol and we could have one more boxing star.
