The films are shrinking; going international way
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
Progressively the duration of the average Hindi film is being cut short and it is being packaged as a product in conformity with international norms. Normally, international films do not have a run of more than two hours, but in comparison an average Hindi film is not less than three quarter of an hour, as it has to include the entire dance and the drama.
But the new breed of filmmakers, are trying to deconstruct the parameters of filmmaking and are making it more crisp and prim. EKLAVYA is about two-hours, HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT LTD a trifle more than two-hours, same with BLACK FRIDAY and also LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI. The average length has now shrunk from 17 reels for a film to being 14 reels, while the international films have an average length of about 10-12 reels.
In the recent past, it was BLACK, which had set this trend of making shorter films, while a decade ago Vidhu Vinod Chopra in his KHAMOSH had undertaken this kind of experiment and he revisited his experiment once again through EKLAVYA. Even Big B has been a part of this experiment earlier and he is probably the only star who has been a part of this experiment in India for quite a number of times, they being MAIN AZAAD HOON, and BLACK along with EKLAVYA.
As MAIN AZAAD HOON could not make a mark commercially, the experimentation in the mainstream cinema of making films of shorter duration was abandoned. It is altogether a different matter that this trend has its recurrent mooring in films of the arty kind, or the serious cinema so to say.
The films of short duration have suddenly found a new lease of life and it has to thank the advent of multiplexes for the same. With the advent of multiplexes the number of shows during a day could be increased and this translated into increased revenue for the multiplexes, as also the producers of this films as the more the number of shows more faster it was to recoup the investment, as one could have a minimum of five show with these movies as compared to four for a routine Hindi Movie.
It is altogether a different matter that the acceptability of the shorter duration of cinema is more in the metropolitan cities than in the smaller centers. It has also to do with the fact that the youth of today has been exposed to this genre of films from outside, and as such they are receptive to the same for a Hindi film. Whatever it may be, now if the director does not want he may want waste the raw stock just for the sake of it, and come up with a taut product, which has more commercial sense to it.
