During the anchoring of the Filmfare award function Shah Rukh Khan in his jest committed the same faux pas which he had reportedly committed during one of the AIFA awards, of taking a jibe against Amar Singh and for which he also unnecessarily faced demonstration in front of his house. He had passed the comments, when talking about KABHIE ALVIDA NA KEHNA that Amar Singh should not eye the lady who was accompanying him on the stage with some intent. Was it a faux pas or was it intentional?
It has been happening on a regular basis when the stars are anchoring the shows, is the intention of doing it an intent or is it a slip of tongue, or is it that in the zeal to be a good anchor and to copy their illustrative peers of Oscars, and to demonstrate that our stars are also on the same latitude this kind of cusp words are dropped to generate controversy and thereby gain media bytes.
The award nights of various hues as they are happening in the country have become an industry in themselves, in terms of the commercial interest that they generate and is it owing to the commercial interest that is generated that the anchors try to court controversy to be in the lime light as far as the role of anchoring is concerned? While in the west the awards night are still a black tie and gown event and is an occasion to recognize and honor the merit and labor of the artist, in India it has become more of a song and dance jamboree and therefore in the melee it also happens that the anchors tend to cut short the winners from giving there winning speeches as well. Besides, the technical category of awards, which finally give the shape to the films, especially in India are given just a total go by in all the category of award functions in the same latitude.
While the multitude hues of awards are also the requiem world over, more so in Hollywood, there all the awards stand out from each other, which is still not so the case with India and that could be the reason why an Aamir and a Ajay Devgun while eagerly participate and promote their films in international award function give it a go by in India.
The award night have become a dance and drama saga after the advent of television and the telecast of these events, which is where the controversies tend to erupt as in the zeal to be novel faux pas become the by-product. By being converted into an industry and with multitude of commercial interest riding on these awards, a tad controversy also gets translated into commercial contracts for the future, as the controversies continued to generate the interest. But in the bargain the sanctimony and the seriousness that the award functions are associated with lose the sheen, and are gradually converging to a stage where they are booming an annual song and drama sag. May be, taking a leaf out of the way Oscars and other such international awards are conducted, could inject a professional attitude to the award ceremonies, and a Shah Rukh or a Saif can gain status of anchoring where it may become difficult for organizers to ignore them. This is after all the objective with which the anchors work, but right now to ensure continuities on a year on end controversies are sought to be the channel vehicle. May be it would evolve with the time.
