Diamonds are forever: the hunt unwinds once more
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
Diamonds though have been an object of fascination among the ladies, they also have been the theme of many a Hindi Films, but they seemed to have lost the focus during the last few years. To regain the charm and the aura associated with it, diamond as a theme is going to make its presence felt once again on the firmament of the Hindi film industry in the shape of FOOL AND FINAL and CASH, CASH following FOOL AND FINAL. This would also be probably for the first time that the new generation of actors like Ajay DevgAn, Sunil Shetty would be following the trail of diamonds in all seriousness.
Right from the days of CID of Dev Anand diamonds have been found to disappear in interesting places, the most common appearing as a recurring motif in nearly all the films being in the walking sticks. It was the diamonds, which had eked out the best performance of Prem Nath till date in JOHNY MERA NAAM. Dev Anand had a particular fascination for diamonds and they appear in one film or the other in as a binding theme. Dev Anand in fact had named himself as Heera in various films that he produced. He even went to the extent of naming one of his films as HIRA PANNA probably getting inspired by the name of the English film DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.
The fascination for diamonds as a theme in a film is also what had given Amitabh Bachchan three of his biggest hit films of his career, KAALIA, NATWARLAL and SHAAN. Who could forget the chessboard climax for the fight of diamond in KAALIA between AB and Amjad Khan? Or for that matter the title song of SHAAN which began with the theft of diamond and culminated into a friendship and love on the screen, as it had happened between AB and Parveen Babi, and by a surprising coincidence in two of the three films it was Parveen Babi who was the love interest of AB.
One more thing that has been a recurring motif in all the diamond-based films is that they have been fast paced, may be in keeping with the aura that diamond has for itself. Besides, the diamond based films have had a certain sense of finesse about them, and therefore all the actors could not conform to the role of a diamond thief as a Dev Anand could or a AB could, and that could probably be the reason why other actors may have tried to play the role of diamond theme the finesse could not be executed in the characterization and as such the films could not succeed. Therefore, though a whole film was made on the theme of diamond, SHALIMAAR it could not attain the same level of commercial success as the earlier diamond theme films could make.
For the sake of the audience and for the sake of diamonds it is hoped that these two films coming in tandem would be able to convey the finesse, which the Hindi films have associated with diamonds, or else the glitter may not be of 22 carat variety at the box office.
