Season of Sequels

View Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay Movie Stills While  may continue to fight to get the name of SHOLAY for his new film, and continue to shoot it as RAMGOPAL VERMA KE SHOLAY, suddenly it has started raining sequels on the box office in India, and they are of the Hollywood kind, but have set the box office on fire all across the country. SPIDERMAN-3, has got record openings, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END has also hit the box office, SHREK-THE THIRD is coming on first June 2007, followed by a sequel to HARRY POTTER.

What is it that makes the Hollywood producers go in for making sequels on a regular basis, while in India a successful movie is rarely followed by a sequel, DHOOM-2, being the exception. Hollywood has recognized that the film, which gets a fantastic opening and creates new frontiers is no more a film but it has evolved as a brand and once a brand has evolved, it has to be nurtured and allowed to grow further. This is what is done through the series of sequels that Hollywood attempts, and this Download Dhoom 2 Wallpapersis the reason why even the Bruce Willis series, DIE HARD which hit the screen for the first time twenty years ago, continues to appear in one form or the other. The same needs to be recognized by the Indian film fraternity as well, that they have a brand in their hands, which needs to be nurtured and allowed to grow, and should not be mired in court cases, and to be fought in courts as violation of intellectual property. With the market economics and revenue dominating the process of film making it is always the better choice to extend a product in a different manner, which already has made a mark for itself. That is probably the reason why there is some thinking going around in India as well to make one more sequel to DON and also LAGAAN. Boney Kapoor is already brushing his scripts to come up with another version of Mr. INDIA.

Hindi film industry is on a different trip as far as the iconic moves are concerned, they are remaking the black and white films into colour under the presumption that an audience which has not seen this magic of the past would love to see it in colour, but the MUGHAL-E-AAZAM experiment has already conveyed Download Don Wallpapersthe message that just coloring the film would not do at all. As it happened with Shah Rukh Khan's DON which he tried to do in a modern context, and so the film met with some success. This is an intellectual bankruptcy, which is of a much serious dimension than producing sequels of a movie, as there is an opportunity to do some thing new with the sequels. Economically speaking sequels have generated twice the revenue that the producers got from the first movie, so it is high time Indian film industry start giving it a serious thought.

As it is, one would be having a story base to launch the product on it when a sequel is being made, which is less of a danger than venturing into turbid waters of unknown by making films where the story line, may not be a certainty.
