When LAAGA CHUNRI MEIN DAAG releases tomorrow it would be affirmation for Raani Mukerjee as peaking in her acting career. For any female actor, the swan song has been enactment of the role of the courtesan or the woman who is into the business of profession of body selling to sustain the family in one way or the other. For Rani Mukerjee it also should be the swan song as the role of a courtesan that she enacted in MANGAL PANDEY did not provide her enough chance to interpret this genre of characterization in her own way, as LAAGA CHUNRI MEIN DAAG seems to be providing from the promos and the teasers.

Were one to take the trip down the memory lane starting right from Nargis it was her role in ADALAT, which gave her persona a new flavour. For Suchitra Sen the opportunity presented to her was with MAMTA, which till date is one of the better films of her oeuvre where she was able to display the histrionics in an accomplished manner. MAUSAM in the same manner was the swan song for Sharmila Tagore.

Meena Kumari also achieved the same through PAKEEZA, which is considered the best performance of Meena Kumari till date. Reena Roy was also one of the actors who once she stepped into this genre continued to excel in the same. For Hema Malini as well, the role, which she did it in YUDDH, was one of the crowning features of her career.

There is a streak of similarity at the time when the female stars have enacted these roles, and if they have attempted earlier in life they have been rejected by the audience, as it happened with Aishwarya Rai in UMRAO JAAN. There have been roles and there have been enactments of the role of the courtesan but the way it was sort of patented by Rekha still remains unsurpassed, and whenever a memoir about enactment of the role of courtesan in Hindi films is written Rekha would find the most significant reference. For Rekha the journey, which began with MUQUADDAR KA SIKANDER, found its climax in UMRAO JAAN.

One more common streak of these enactments of the role of courtesans has been that all of these films were a big musical success as well and where music did not contribute to the success, then the film also could not scale the summit as it happened in the case of UMRAO JAAN of Aishwarya Rai. Viewed from this perspective LAAGA CHUNRI MEIN DAAG's music is yet to make the mark and would it emerge as one of the deciding factors, one does not know.

The female actors generally tend to do these films at the end of the career, as they seem to bring in all of their experience in the performance, and as the performance covers the gamut of emotions through various stages, it strikes a chord with the audience. This could be probably one of the reasons why Rani Mukerji's earlier role in MANGAL PANDEY did not attain a success, as the character was not carved out in a proper manner. In LAAGA CHUNRI MEIN DAAG it appears that the characterization of Rani is building up in a graduated manner and this could tilt the balance in favour of Rani this time around. There is however a difference from such enactments of Rani's predecessors in the sense that Rani is being seen here in the role of a commercial sex worker. But this is the modern evolution of the courtesan over a time frame, as these days one hardly finds the kothas where one goes to listen to the music. So for the sake of survival body has become the commodity, and there are quite a lot of such actualities happening all over the country. May be, this would open a new vista for Rani as well, as it is after a matter of time that these kinds of role fall into the life of an actor, and it is an affirmation of the prowess that one commands in the business of acting.
