Pandit Jasraj had openly disapproved about a voice being selected by the SMS based votes, Lata Mangeshkar had also shown her disenchantment with the process of selecting a voice based on SMSs received from all across the country, and now Ismail Darbar has gone on the record to question the selection of Aneek Dhar as the voice of SA RE GA MA PA 2007 and has insinuated that some kind of manipulation has been undertaken and Aneek is not the voice of SA RE GA MA PA 2007 at all.
The popularity of the reality shows is increasing day-by-day and those whom the judges do not want are kicked out by the audience poll and they are left to despair. This also became evident in the last episode of 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa'-3 where the pair of Tapur Chatteerjee along with her partner was voted out, though the judges were of the view that it was Mika along with her partner who should have been voted out, as Tapur was a better dancer than Mika. But what tilted the scale in favour of Mika was the sort of fiat that he should to all his Punjabi brethren to vote for him. In fact this kind of invocation is to be found as a regular feature where the probable candidates try to invoke one form of appeal or the other having underpinnings of emotions. This is what Jaideep Sahni has also commented against in CHAK DE and sort of implored upon the nation to get out of the parochial approach to issues.
The disagreement of Pandit Jasraj and also Lata Mangeshkar to the process of selection therefore has a basis as if one is to become a singer or the voice of the nation then he should not appeal that panders to the regional identities but invoke the national spirit. To get around this phenomenon, AMUL STAR VOICE OF INDIA introduced the concept of bringing back few singers who were booted out through SMS by giving the judges the overriding powers to the judges. It should be like that; a vote-based selection overriding the expertise of the professional of the field tends to make the whole process eschewed. The selection based on SMS is biased in favour of the states where the incidence of influence as also the spread of the tentacles of communication network are of a higher order as compared to other parts of the country, where the required bandwidth and other accompaniments may not be able to support the heavy traffic of voting.
This is what is probably peeving Ismail Darbar as well, as the judges have not been given the final authority to decide the winner. But the problem with this logic also lies in the fact that the judges have their own protégées, and there always is a chance to have a bias for one's protégée. But it has got a scope of more impartiality than what is being done through SMS based results.
With more and more reality shows being launched on multitude of television channels, the voices against selections of the winners would assume shriller proportions. To maintain the semblance of balance it would be therefore advisable to introduce some kind of an audit as also to let the final decision be vested with the judges, who after all have been brought to the panel based on their expertise.
