Tashan in Punjabi lexicon refers to the sense of smugness that an individual has about himself, or the smugness that one has about his abilities to do the things in one's own manner. Yash Chopra's TASHAN seems to be epitomizing the same smugness and the zing that one has about oneself. Tashan is also in the air as the film is not going to be released in the multiplexes as the deal between Yash Raj films and the multiplex owners has fallen through for the share of the revenue.
TASHAN is also in the oblique sense looms on the film as well, as it has to take into account the IPL Twenty-Twenty fever that has gripped the country. The Tashan of 20-20 was very well summed up by a punter who said it is like a three hour film where you have all the ingredients of an Indian potboiler, and that too being enjoyed in the cozy comforts of the drawing room, then why should one venture out to see a movie. Yash Raj films has to counter this Tashan of the movie viewing public to wean it away from the cricket frenzy and step into the cinema halls. The battle seems to be favoured more towards the 20-20 as of now, as it is taking place in the prime time of the cinema viewing, i.e. from 8.00 p.m to 11.30 p.m. so it is invading into the prime time of the cinema show timings.
Tashan has had an interesting association with the Indian actors, and there are actors who have survived on the basis of the TASHAN that they have brought into their persona through various enactments. For Anil Kapoor this journey had started in a definite manner in JAANBAZZ, and its earlier inkling was shown in YUDDH. In the same vein for Akhshay Kumar the upward roller caster ride of Tashan started through the Khiladi series of films, but it got its ultimate manifestation in MOHRA and it is now getting a second lease of life through TASHAN as in the meanwhile Akshay moved to the other end of the spectrum by carving a genre for himself in the field of humour. For Kareena her Tashan happened in JAB WE MET and now TASHAN could see her solidifying Tashan around her characterization. For Saif Ali Khan his Tashan flowered through OMKARA and it also now finds accentuation through TASHAN via RACE.
The interesting matter would be whether the Tashan of the film would prevail or it would be overwhelmed by the Tashan of 20-20. Tashan after all is an entity in whose lexicon comprise or submission or wilting does not find a place, and it would be interesting to see whose Tashan would prevail.
