Guitar is back and has romance come back with it?
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
Is it not fortuitous that the strum of guitar that lilts through like a gentle breeze sometimes rising like crescendo evoking exalted passion converging to seduction in BACHNA AIE HASEENO is in its own way symbolic of return of romance through guitar? Indeed for Ranbir Kapoor, guitar so far has been an integral accompaniment both in SAAWARIYA and BACHNA AIE HASEENO. While SAWARIYA may not have set the box office on fire, the strumming tune of guitar in the title song, still tickles the emotion of romance based on the manner in which the strings are played in the song, either in prelude, interlude or in the background.
For the Indian films or for that matter any other films guitar has been associated with romance since the time the magic of cinema was revealed by the Lumiere brothers. The god of guitar Elvis Presley followed by Beatles and all the other illustrative successors have been on a real ride of discovery to unravel to the romantics inside us the passion that the strumming of strings invokes.
In case of Ranbir Kapoor guitar can be said to be a part of his family tradition and the image of romance that the film viewing public associates with this family. When Shammi Kapoor strummed it in CHINA TOWN with ''Baar Baar dekho... followed by Rishi Kapoor in nearly all his films, becoming his extension in KARZ in a crescendo, to Ranbir Kapoor in BACHNA AIE HASEENO, the guitar accentuated the image of romance as a feeling to be savored in gay abandon. Even the short run that Randhir Kapoor had in film industry, in his career, guitar based songs had played a very important role, be it in JAWAANI DEEWANI, RAMPUR KA LAXMAN, BIWI O BIWI etc.
In the case of Indian films, the person who has been single handedly responsible for unraveling the magic of guitar to the Indian films is Pancham Da aka R D Burman. The elaborate arrangements and experiments that he made with guitar was a connoisseur's delight. After he passed away the magic of guitar is on the downside and the aficionados to soak in its magic revisit songs from Pancham's oeuvre. May be, after Ranbir Kapoor having developed a fondness for guitar, in the future, he could through his films, create the same kind of musical magic that his father Rishi Kapoor did with guitar in his prime time.
