ROCK ON: Initiation of a new era of Indian brand of rock music

When was the last time that a director having made a successful debut as a director decided to dawn the grease paint and come in front of the camera. Farhan Akhtar just did that with ROCK ON. After a really long time, i.e. if one has to step into the annals of the film history, probably after Guru Dutt, Farhan Akhtar has tried to do the same with ROCK ON. He has also gone one step further than Guru Dutt in the sense that he has also sung for ROCK ON.
The success that Farhan Akhtar has received underlines the fact that the directors can become very good actors as well; the only thing is that they need to give themselves a good script to back on, as they do it for other stars. This must have been the trigger process which made Ranbir Kapoor express that he also would like to become a director.
A director understands what he wants, it is just that he has to creep inside the character and once it is done, then the results are there for all to se. The same trend happens in Hollywood as well, and Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Kevin Costner etc., are successful examples to buttress the point. The case of Farhan Akhtar is different though, as he after having established himself as a successful director, has stepped in front of the camera and created new frontiers there as well.
As a country where there is a rock generation, it has happened for the first time that a film purely based on rock music has been liked by one and all. It is owing to the fact that we all have been enamored of the magic of rock, and when it has been set up in an Indian context the identification with the scenario is more so pronounced.
Is it probably owing to this reason, that the ROCK ON does not the usual paraphernalia associated with the rock scenario i.e. drugs, vagabonding, emptiness etc. India is one of the few countries where in the population construct the youth dominate as a percentile composition. In a BPO scenario, where exposure to the western nuances has created awareness about rock music in a more profound manner, ROCK ON as a first film is sure to spawn more such films exploring setting up of rock bands around the universities and colleges. After all, we all have been a part of one form of the rock band or the other in our school college days, and there are more stories to tell.
