R D Burman: King of absurd sound
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
Jal Tarang or making music out of water has been an Indian innovation, but an innovation which is yet to be emulated is of making different nature of acoustic sounds from as unconventional objects, as a bottle or a comb or a broom for that matter. Therefore, even though Pancham passed away more than a decade ago, on his death anniversary his unconventional sounds still continue to rule the roost in this era of techno music. No other music director can be recognized by the fans all over the world in such a jiffy, as a Pancham, just by clink of the glass bottle with a spoon which he made one of his signature tunes after YADDON KI BARAAT. The signature tune of GOLMAAL is still the original composition whose nodes when as soon as they start flowing announce to the world that is Pancham.
Every year when Pancham's death anniversary or birth anniversary is celebrated these experiments in sound are waxed eloquently but after that nobody wishes to practice it and it is the same technical sound which dominates the music scene which is produced out of the jugglery of the key boards.
On his death anniversary it would be a befitting tribute to talk about the innovative manner in which Pancham used Rafi and Mukesh to his advantage. His first solo hit TEESRI MANZIL was an out and out Rafi composition but after the advent of AMAR PREM and ARADHANA Pancham showed his marked preference for Kishore over Rafi.
However, Pancham did not let Rafi go just like that and in most of the films in which he gave music, till the time Rafi was alive, he had a song to sing. Be it ARADHANA, or in HUM KISSI SE KUM NAHIN, or YADON KI BARAAT, Rafi was always there whenever a song with a classical base was to be recorded. The epiphany of this competitiveness which Pancham exploited to the hilt found echo in HUM KISSI SE KUM NAHIN. It is to the genius of Pancham that he got a song sung by three singers, Rafi, Kishore and Lata Mangeshkar in PYAAR KA MAUSAM and it is the only song sung by three different singers, and the one which was sung by Rafi, the song being Tum Bin Jaun Kahan, is still the most popular.
Music is the synthesis of various mixtures of sound, and the synthesis which was attained by Pancham is still unsurpassed.
