Hollywood Actors' solidarity for writers

Hollywood actors have come out in support of striking writer guild that is on strike for the last four months. To express solidarity with the striking actors all the major actors have also boycotted the major award functions taking place in Hollywood this year. If an actor for whom award is the ultimate triumph of the acting ability is ready to forego the same, it really underlines the importance that the actors in Hollywood have for the writers.

Now contrast the same situation with Hindi Film industry, or for that matter the Indian film industry as a whole. Can it happen in Hindi films in particular, where the actors to express solidarity with the cause of the writers are ready to strike work? The possibility of it happening in the Hindi film industry is a remote possibility.

Writers have not been held in high esteem in the Hindi film industry to the extent that there suggestions and the desires are incorporated in the drawing board stages of the films. Before, the advent of Salim-Javed, writer as a fraternity in the Hindi films did not exist at all. In most of the credit scores of a film if one were to rewind, it is the director who also shoulders the responsibility of being the writer as well. The real writer lurks somewhere in the background.

Among the current crop if one were to draw a list of writers who are now held in high esteem and have turned the tide in the favour of writers, in terms of providing a credence and credibility to the profession of writing as a specialty for films, the names that would come in the A-list would include those of Jaideep Sahni, and Kamleshwar along with Javed Akhtar. In fact what Salim-Javed had did for the writers in seventies, is being done by Jaideep Sahni in the present decade.

Even then, there is no writers' guild having a semblance of recognition as an authority to set the terms for the writers. The real reason why Hollywood stars have come out in solidarity with the writers union is the fact that the writers provide them diversified nature of role to experiment with and carve a niche for themselves. There is an understanding among the stars of Hollywood that without a start to finish script the film floats without a mooring.

In most of the Hindi films the scripts are in an ever evolving stage to the extent of continuing to express the process of churning on the sets itself. Till the time the writers unite and come as a decisive unit, and also liaison with the stars to push through their written stories, the recognition would not come into their way. Besides, the stars also should seek inspiration from there brethren of Hollywood and promote writers and the longevity of their shelf-life and honeymoon with the audience would be ensured. It has to be understood that the dreams that the actors weave on the silver screen is the dream that has been an expression of the toil of a writer, and if the basic timber is not novel, then any amount of gloss would not ensure its success.
