Reality of the Reality Shows
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
Is it not ironical that when a child contestant lost her voice in the local singing reality programme in a Bangla channel, it was just mentioned as a small news item? It also happened with a contestant who was participating in a reality show to claim a record for him, was on the verge of passing out from this world. Have reality shows become so surreal that in the zeal to claim TRPs outlandishness and the ability to shock has started becoming the norm.
When the reality shows made their debut in India it was a weekly fixture, more a weekend fixture and it was watched with pleasure. But now with mushrooming of the entertainment channels, two-three reality shows continue to be beamed on one television show or the other in one format or the other. It has indeed become a battle for eyeballs, as an eyeball mean TRP and TRP means moolah.
In this game of reality shows judges have become an indirect contributors towards the increase or decrease of their TRP by either entering into a spat with each other or into a spat with a participant or even with an audience. With the programmes mushrooming like anything, the off-work celebrities have found a new mode of employment as a judge, and they have the innate desire to extend their tenure from one programme to another. In their zeal to protect the turf, the by-product has been the flying of tempers.
It is having a debilitating effect on the children who come to participate in various programmes, they are made ridicule of various snide remarks, and jokes, and to appear glamorous they are even ready to consign their innocence to the bins. Such has become the desire to be in the drawing room of the citizens of the country, that even protest morchas have been organized in various cities by the participants who were kicked out at various stages.
Organizers of the reality show need to take the wake up call, as in their zeal for TRPs they are forgetting the immense psychological damage that they are inflicting to the personality of the participants. Children or the adult participants should not be made a pawn as a SMS cannot decide whether an individual has a talent to carve a niche for himself in the field of creativity.
