Environment as a subject gets attention of the mainstream hindi cinema

After signing a deal with the celebrated wild life filmmaker Mike Pandey to make a film on the tigers in India, John Abraham has emerged as the first among the present generation who has risen to the cause of the wild life to protect their interest. Film industry all over the world on a yearly basis in the mainstream genre has been picking up the theme of nature, but not so the Hindi film industry. It is altogether a different matter that documentary filmmakers like Mike Pandey, Romesh Bedi, Alva brothers etc., in their own way are working for the cause of the environment. However, when a star does it, it has different impact, and this is what is happening around the world for quite a long time but not so in our country. It seems that the time for it has come now.

Were one to count on fingers the name of films which has addressed the cause of nature in the present times and in which the either of the super stars have participated the list would draw a blank, but for a KAAL which brought in the element of super natural to deal with the subject. The aspect of conservation has not been focused upon in the manner in which even the Chinese film industry or the Thai film industry has done through the films made about conservation of the Pandas, Elephants etc. THE ELEPHANT made in Thai is one such film, which explores the aspect of attachment that an animal and a human being can have. Was one to talk about the symbolic representation of animals, dogs generally fill up the canvas in the Hindi films.

In the past quite a lot of films with protection of wild life as the theme were made be it MAA, or HAATHI MERE SAATHI, SAFED HAATHI etc. May be as we have imbibed urbanism with a vengeance we have left the nature to fend for it. The time has however come to bring into relief the problems that nature is facing and more leads like John Abraham need to be followed. Cause of Tiger needs to be served, and if the Indian film stars come forward and spread this message through a film, may be then it would get the necessary fillip.
