In the national awards category for the year 2007, a new winner has been added to the category; however the same has not been underlined, though it is a monumental moment for the industry. A new genre has been created for chronicling the happenings of the film industry, and Jerry Pinto's work on Helen, which is a biography, has been awarded the best work on film writing.

While written work chronicling various facets of the Hindi film industry have been floating around in the market, the recognition to this genre by conferring it National Award would surely initiate a new phase of serious writing in Hindi cinema. Last two years have been very prolific as far as writing on Hindi films is concerned. However these trends have been more in the terms of coffee table books on stars, thriving more on the glamour quotient of the star than delving deep into the psyche of the career graph of the star in question. Among the works that can be mentioned is the autobiography of Dev Anand, book on Shah Rukh Khan by Anupama Chopra, another work on industry titled "Bollywood: The Indian Cinema Story Nasreen Munni Kabeer (which incidentally has been reported to have gone out of print) etc.

As a genre of writing, writing on films is a serious business in Hollywood. The same seriousness for it has yet to be achieved in the Hindi films. With the stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and directors like Karan Johar etc., turning to blogging in a big way and the hits that the websites get for reading these blogs is any indication, and then there is a definite market for serious writing on films waiting to be tapped.

As the generational shift is being experienced in industry, and the stars of the previous generation who are milestone for the film industry on the verge of walking into the sunset of their life, there is a need for pacing this effort in a big manner. The award conferred on biography of Helen in conjunction with the initiatives of blogging should give this genre of writing a new contour.
