Katrina Kaif has been reportedly paid an amount of Rs. 1.5 crore to do an item song in BLUE and this is the biggest amount that has been paid to a star to do the item song. Hrithik Roshan has been singing hosannas about the item song that Rakhi Sawant has done for KRAZZY 4. Katrina Kaif seems to be following in the footsteps of Kareena Kapoor in the sense that Kareena's item song in KYA LOVE STORY HAI carved a new phase of career for her. The million-dollar question is can it do the same for Katrina?

Katrina Kaif has been on a roller-caster ride as far as her career is concerned, from being ridiculed to not being able to speak Hindi properly, she has come to establish herself as diva who is considered to be a lucky mascot, as the number of hits that she has given is quite large. It all started with NAMASTE LONDON, followed by WELCOME and in the wings are RACE and SINGHH IS KING. She has in fact emerged as a lucky mascot and one of the lucky pairs with Akshay Kumar after a long time. Akshay Kumar has been acting with different heroines, but off late he is pairing with Katrina Kaif more often, and the on-screen chemistry seems to be working wonders for both of them.

The real success of an item song depends upon the music and for a music director it indeed is a challenge, as the item song is marketed as an USP to bring the audience into the theatres. This is what had happened in KYA LOVE STORY HAI where Ayesha Takiya was overshadowed by one item song and Kareena got all the accolades. However, this is one of the rare occasions, as in OMKARA though Bipasha Basu did the item song Beedi Jalaile… An item song did not overshadow Kareena Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma and this is what contributed to the success of the film in a big way.

The moot point of an item song is that it should not be included as an afterthought but it should flow into the narrative. The history of Hindi films is an ample testimony to the same and one of the celebrated examples from the past is " Mehbooba Mehbooba from SHOLAY.

For Katrina Kaif to have been drafted for an item song, and that too for a cost, which is the normal remuneration for a female actor, it is acknowledgment about the outreach and affinity that he has been able to establish with the audience. It is also an acceptance about the fact that a female actor who is doing it has become an accomplished dancer, and that is precisely the reason why she has been given this opportunity. Viewed from this perspective, item song in BLUE would be a great statement from Katrina Kaif to all her critics who have been after to brand her as a non-performer and would also be a statement of coming out of the shadow of Salman Khan and carve her own place in the sun. Her success would be more sweet as this would be one of the rare few instances of a film star who was born and brought up in England and has established her foot firmly into the Byzantine maze of the Hindi film world.
