Coming closely on the heels of DOSTANA, SORRY BHAI is one more attempt by Onir to chart a new course in the genre of film making. It is an attempt to deviate from the beaten path where a bhabhi or would be bhabhi is treated with a reverence and respect, and it tires to go under the skin to understand the nuances, desires and aspirations of falling in love with a person with whom you are not destined to meet.
The notion has been there lurking in the literature as also in the regional films but it is for the first time that a mainstream Hindi film tries to have a dekho into this aspect, but as the issue is one that may bring in brickbats as well, the element of comedy has been chosen as the channel vehicle to test the efficacy and viability of the concept in the present changing socio-economic dynamics.
Choice of Chitrangda Singh as the bride is also circumstantially beneficial as she is making a come back after a critically acclaimed film HAZARON KHWAISHEN AISI, where she was in the role of an activist, but there would hardly be few viewers who would have a remembrance of the character enacted by her.
Onir has been carving a niche for himself slowly through his films wherein he tries to set into the mainstream agenda the arguments which we all know exist, but try to brush it under the carpet, MY BROTHER NIKHIL as also BAS EK PAL precede in the same genre. His faith in Sanjay Suri continues with SORRY BHAI and Sharman Joshi plays another urban suave character. As a matter of fact, Sharman Joshi when he underplays himself as he did in LIFE IN A METRO and now in SORRY BHAI to wriggle out the scenario of an existentialist dilemma is at his best. SORRY BHAI would further accentuate his genre.
In HONEYMOON TRAVELS a new adult romantic pair was unleashed on to the screen in the form of Boman Irani and Shabahna Azmi and they seem to have taken off from there.
While there have been score of films that have been made where the boy when he has gone to see a girl has fallen for the younger sister, the romance blossoming between would be bride and brother of would be husband, is a new experimentation being attempted on the screen before. SORRY BHAI's innovativeness lies in its ability to unleash the emotions when on having a first hand exposure with a beauty the heart is unable to accept it in any other role but a romantic partner. The back drop of Mauritius provides an interesting back drop and must have been used to provide the catalysis for treading the territory hitherto not visited before.
