As it is happening in other industrial segments, where the avenues of cash are drying up to promote innovativeness on account of tightening of the fiscal situation around the world, film industry is not immune to this change. As it has been reported as well, the traditional money bags have started coming into reckoning once again. But seeped as they are in the traditional world view, they may not have appreciation for experimentation for new wave of cinema.

The new wave of cinema represented by films like EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL, SORRY BHAI, OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE etc., had been given a fillip as institutional finance was made available that allowed the producers and directors associated with it the liberty to experiment to their hearts content. Should they then wind up the shop and start searching for other avenues?

Not really. When one channel is closed, other channel does open up. For this new genre of film creators, a committed fan following and a base has already been created for this new wave of cinema which is enlightened and is in a position to chip in all manners to help and sustain the cause. Internet, after all has emerged as a forum that has element of democracy enshrined in its codes in such a manner that it could turn out to be the savior. The advantage of the forum of Internet lies in the fact that it does not operate on the crutches of seed capital, or the initial investments to set the ball rolling. It nurtures and fosters the uniqueness of the idea, and allows it to take wings in as natural way as could be possible, like a rivulet finding its way through different landscapes.

As a country where more than 3 billion tickets are sold on an annual basis, and of these tickets sold at least one third are those who have warmed up to the cause of the new wave of cinema, as it mirrors there aspirations and angst, the paucity of finance to continue to experiment should not be an issue at all. As it is happening in the area of research based article writing, what has been patented by wikipedia, which is christened as crowd authoring, same kind of experiment has definite potential to succeed in film financing?

The concept can be christened as crowd financing. The ability of crowd financing to succeed lies in the fact that it is based on democratic manner of financing i.e. more and more number of stake holders coming together and pooling their resources for a cause. With diffused stake holding, the producer and director would have the upper hand, and therefore they can continue to experiment.

It could be an example of implementation of the notion of micro credit in the realm of film making, and if it happens it would be the triumphant day for the spirit of creativity.
