Hartal in the Industry

Strike is a word that causes a dread in any industry, and the Hindi film industry is no exception. The discontent had been simmering for quite a long time and it has now manifested in the form of total strike. The last time it happened was way back in 1960s. If it has happened after 48 years it must have had the cause of precipitation.

Has it taken a cue from the strike, which happened few months ago in Hollywood, and had brought whole industry to the stand still Hindi film industry has also struck work. The difference from Hollywood lies in the fact that in Hollywood the writers had stuck work, whereas in Hindi film industry, it is the team of foot soldiers of the industry in the shape of technicians, spot boys etc., all, the nuts and bolts, so to say, have stuck work.

If one were to assuage the cause of provocation, could it be the raise in remuneration of the stars, films being declared as hit, by issuing statements about the same in various forms of media, and the benefits of this not percolating down to the foot soldiers. They are of the opinion that their status has not undergone much change, while those who use them in execution of the work are getting all the benefits.

One school of thought is that the foreign technicians and foreign cinematographers are encroaching on their territory. But the reason for this has not been delved into detail, it seems. A foreign technician or a foreign spot boy is being preferred by the industry, and is paid much also as he is more technically equipped and professionally qualified.

When the strike comes to an end, it should also induce a sense of introspection in those who are associated with the strike. The large production houses, as it is, given a choice, prefer foreign locations and studios to wind up their films in a jiffy. It is the small and medium scale filmmakers who are put at disadvantage as they work on a shoestring budget and on finances that have been borrowed at exorbitant rates. The august body of the association also needs to bring about professionalism in its approach and deliver much more than their competitors from foreign country are doing. If it were done, then the resource personnel from India would be the first and the preferred choice. The comfort with an Indian crew, after all is more, as they speak the native language and not the foreign technicians and crew members who are the bone of contention.
