When he had made his debut in MERI JUNG in 1983-84, under the baton of Subhash Ghai, he made an impression but he could not create a slot for himself as there always was an existential dilemma for him whether to follow in the footsteps of his father or to carve a niche for himself. Javed Jaffrey tried to swim against the tide, and therefore it has taken him such a long time to come into reckoning once again. In the meanwhile he never left his first passion, dance, and kept him in circulation with his show and as fallout has created a huge fan following among the children through his BOOGIE WOOGIE show.
Could it be that the fan following that Javed Jaffrey has been able to create for himself through his dance show has been an instrumental factor in Jugal Hansraj choosing him to feature along with Saif Ali Khan as a voice over for probably the first full-scale commercial animation film, ROADSIDE ROMEO where established stars like Saif, Kareena and Javed are giving voice over. It has been in vogue in Hollywood for quite a long time and its most celebrated example is LION KING, which broke new grounds for using established actors as voice-overs.
The real turn over for Javed Jaffrey as far as films are concerned started with his Crocodile Dandy type of role in SALAAM NAMASTE where his lingua franca emerged as his hallmark. He took it to a new extreme in SINGH IS KINNG and with ROADSIDE ROMEO the funny bone of Javed may get a new lease of life. In the transformation that has occurred in Javed Jaffrey's career, he seems to have selected television shows to showcase his talent for dance, while he was carved his niche in films with his claws through his own brand of comedy.
No wonder that he continues to be one of the longest brand icons associated with a tomato Ketchup and though Pankaj Kapoor made a debut along with him in the initial stages, Javed now is the continuing link from the past. ROADSIDE ROMEO would indeed be a test for Javed more so as to whether the rapport that he has been able to establish with his fans through his fan following, where his vocal strengths have also contributed through his dance shows, is able to establish the test of time. In ROADSIDE ROMEO after all the vocal chords would be the USP, and Javed has developed this faculty with aplomb.
