It indeed would be a watershed for Urmila Matondkar, as it would initiate a beginning of a new career for her with KARZZZ. She is now ready to claim the mantle from Rekha and emerge as the Diva with a mystique. It is this element of mystique surrounding Urmila Matondkar that must have been the deciding factor in selecting her to enact the role that Simi had enacted in Subhash Ghai's KARZZZ. It is also owing to the fact that she was the original item girl who through every item performance, be it in CHINA GATE or COMPANY or LAJJA created new standards for dance performances.
Another factor which would have been instrumental in Urmila's selection to play the role played by Simi is the sense of music and dance that Urmila has and which she was able to display in ample vividness when she was one of the judges in JHALAK DIKHLA JA - 2. KARZZZ being a musical film, it was a requiem that the choice of the actor for enacting the role of Simi should be guided by her nuances to and synergy to music.
If the evolution of Urmila as a mystique diva be traced, it would be amply clear that Ram Gopal Verma played an instrumental role in giving her that image and sort of transformed her. The transformation of Urmila post RANGEELA has interesting parallels with Rekha. With the films like EK HASEENA THI and MAINE GANDHI KO NAHIN MARA, she has demonstrated with aplomb that Urmila is ready to take off from Rekha and become her real replacement.
KARZZZ would mark an interesting transition in her career, a career that has been built up on the heady concoction of music and dance right from her MASOOM days and as Shekhar Kapoor had given her a launch with MASOOM, his protégée Satish Kaushik may be instrumental in her evolution as a new Diva of the Indian cinema. With 900 prints being released Urmila would indeed have an ample opportunity to tell the world that her evolution into a new phase of her acting career has started.
