After the unsavory controversy of nominating EKLAVYA as Indian entry for Oscars for 2007, the authorities have pulled the bunny out of the bag by nominating TAARE ZAMEEN PAR as the official entry from India for 2008. Fortunately this year, for the authorities, it has been an exercise where any film which would have been nominated from the list of nominees, be it MUMBAI MERI JAN, or A WEDNESDAY, or JODHA AKBAR would not have drawn any odious snide, as all of them have been unique in their own way. But TAARE ZAMEEN PAR was on a different platform so its nomination should be welcome.
Would it be third time lucky for Aamir? His sojourn with Oscars started with LAGAAN, where incidentally his rival for 2008 in terms of the potential nominees, Ashutosh Gowarikar was the director. RANG DE BASANTI followed it. TAARE ZAMIN PAR, is the third attempt and it has a fair chance to succeed, as Hollywood has been particularly partial to children films, more so where the child in question is in a disadvantageous position or has a troubled childhood, either owing to his physical disabilities or his learning faculties. It has also been the understated maxim in the film world that when a child or an animal is there in the frame for an actor to stand at the same level it is a very tough task. Scores of films where either children or animals have been in the frame are an ample testimony to the same.
From this perspective TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is in a unique position as the child and the main actor, i.e. Darsheel and Aamir have given extraordinary performance and so in unison they increase the chances for winning the Oscars much more this year. As they say one who is unlucky for two times turns out to be lucky the third time, and may be the time for it has come for Aamir this time around.
It is also fortuitous that Suniel Darshan who is the Chairman of the selection committee was the person who gave Aamir Khan one of the biggest hits in his career RAJA HINDUSTANI, and may be Darshan's presence in the selection committee could have a positive influence on TAARE ZAMEEN PAR as well.
