Can the multiplexes do away with single theatres?
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network
As the multiplex and the film makers tussle refuses to reach a conclusion, it provided an opportunity to visit a single screen theatre to have a feel of the old world charm. The venue was Gaiety theatre in Bandra, which is in fact one of the oldest theatres in Mumbai.
It is a part of the cinematic history, and the edifices of history are studded in the lobby of the cinema halls, trophies announcing the completion of the silver Jubilee or the Golden Jubilee of films of the likes of JUGNU, ZANZEER, and AMAR AKBAR ATHONY. The sepia toned photographs invoking the memory of the era gone-by. Same was the case with Chandan Cinema which is still one of the landmarks in Juhu, where majority of our film stars reside. As far as the ambience of the theatre was concerned, it was no way less in any manner than a multiplex, the only difference being that the interiors still has nostalgic layouts of an era gone by. And the best part of it was, that the hall was full of new fans that used to use multiplexes as the hangouts and they were enjoying the change. The cherry at the top was the rate of ticket and the size of the screen along with the leg space, which was being explored with relish by the young cinema goer
Now is there a multiplex in the country that can boast of collection of array of trophies that announce completion of even 100 days for a film, what to talk about a silver jubilee or a golden jubilee for a film. Trophies are an integral part of the association of films with the cinema halls and it is an umbilical chord that seems to have broken after the advent of the multiplexes.
Films, as a matter of fact, since then have become adopted child after the advent of the multiplexes, and this is one of the issues that are being clamoured about by the film makers. It is the lack of this organic link which the film makers are trying to establish and which the multiplex owners are resisting. Way out has to be found out on an early basis.
