While the flirtation of the Hindi film world with cricket has had a moderate success, still the industry continues to chase this mirage under the hope that it might turn out to be another LAGAAN and they can go laughing all the way to the bank. The latest to join the bandwagon is the UTV Films which is working a new film HOOK YA CROOK starring John Abraham Genelia D'Souza, Kay Kay Menon and Shreyas Talpade as other co-stars in the lead roles. The film is directed by David Dhawan. It has been situated in prison and revolves around a cricket match played among the inmates, an ESCAPE TO VICTORY with cricket as the backdrop instead of football.
The USP of the film is going to be a cameo in the guest role to be played by the Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is a good friend of John Abraham. The film has been shot on location at the Ramoji Rao film studio in Hyderabad. The supporting cast includes Pavan Malhotra, Murli Sharma, Krishna and Sharad Kapoor. For John Abraham it would be a second film on sports after DHAN DHANADHAN GOAL.
It would be for the first time that David Dhawan would be working for the UTV Motion Pictures, and with the kind of image that he has it is anticipated that this film would also be a laugh riot. The USP of the film could be the fresh pairing of John and Genelia, first time on the screen.
Incidentally cricket has become a major occupation with the Bollywood stars, what with three of the key actors Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty owing three of the eight teams playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As the industry is coming to terms with the impasse between multiplex owners and filmmakers, which refuses to melt away, cricket is providing the elixir. Arbaaz Khan has found an alternate career for himself as a cricket commentator on the Times Now and he is capitalizing on it with both the hands. May be, his flirtation with the electronic media on a regular basis for more than a month would provide him enough material to whip up a contemporary film on the working of the electronic media and cricket. So far only one film has tried to look into this aspect with some intent, and it was in PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUSTANI.
Hindi films had flirted for the first time with cricket when Dev Anand had directed Aamir Khan in AWAAL NUMBER and after that the iconic film LAGAAN was the film which was the most successful film where cricket was used as a backdrop. Interestingly enough cricket legends of the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, and Kapil Dev have also been allured by the glitter of the silver screen and have acted in few films before calling it day. In this list name of Syed Kirmani also needs to be included as he had played the role of a villain in the film before calling it a day.
How Dhoni's flirting with the film pan out would, would be a topic that can be discussed after the film is released. This space would be worth watching out for.
