Bikini is an adornment that has the latent potential to provide the initial impetus around a female character that is going to adorn it, particularly in the Indian context, as it still is an event whose periodicity is intermittent. Rani Mukerjee has also decided to take recourse to Bikini to give a necessary fillip to her tottering career in DIL BOLE HADIPPA and the video featuring the same has already started drawing admiring glances. The moot point is whether the bikini at such a later stage in the career would be able to serve its purpose?

One thing is for sure, Rani Mukerjee has indeed worked hard to present herself in a bikini in DIL BOLE HADIPPA and that is what is drawing the appreciation. It also seems to be counterpoised by enactment of a male Sikh character in the film. Indian film world is indeed one of the paradoxical places where a female character if it has to survive in this world on her own has to adorn the male persona and one often wonders whether by providing this kind of characterizations whether we promote the traditionally held notions that have a gendered perspective.

CHECK OUT: Rani, the slim-trim comeback queen!

It had all started with Dev Anand's film TAXI DRIVER in 1954, where Kalpana Kartik had played the role of a Sikh cleaner to Dev Anand and it had become the first real hit film for Dev Anand. Probably, seeking inspiration from the same Raj Kapoor attempted the same on Padmini in MERA NAAM JOKER. The difference between these two films lay in the fact that while Dev Anand was fully aware about the gender of his companion, Raj Kapoor discovered the same when he was shown as accidentally becoming privy to the reality when she was having bath. May be, that was Raj Kapoor's way of presenting the things in perspective as during the process of this discovery he gave one of the most sensual songs to Hindi cinema 'Ang Lagja Balma'. Dev Anand repeated the methodology adopted in TAXI DRIVER when he presented Hema Malini in the role of a Sikh Cleaner in his film JAANEMAN.

The role of a cleaner in a film provides ample scope for creating laughter and DIL BOLE HADIPPA may be able to create this magic once again. For the sake of Rani Mukerjee let’s hope it does.
