SHAHRUKH KHAN and SUBHASH GHAI
Shah Rukh Khan had told it few days ago. Subhash Ghai has been advocating it for quite a long time now, and owing to the scenario arising out of it Meera Nair has decided to shelve the plans of making Shantaram into a movie. As it is happening with other industries, the film industry also is facing a recession in terms of few footfalls into the cinema halls by the patrons. Now it is being bracketed into an expenditure, which can be preceded over by other immediate needs.
Shah Rukh Khan had very clearly said that if the cost cutting is being resorted to by the industry, it needs to be passed on to the patrons that may bring down the rates of tickets and become a catalytic factor for the fans to return to the cinema halls. As a matter of fact fans have indeed become choosy! The moot point however is, can Shah Rukh do it for BILLU BARBER.
Subhash Ghai has gone on record to say that the remuneration of the stars needs to be brought down, as it has become a major component of the budget of the film. There are also views that the remunerations of the stars have increased owing to the entry of the corporate big houses, which raised the bar to get the stars.
The industry is also suffering from rampant piracy and according to the latest estimates the level of piracy of content has gone beyond Rs.5000 crores and it has become a thief, which is doing a daylight robbery on the industry. Films still remain the most passionate form of entertainment and the advent of digital media and its con-commitment advancements are making it literally impossible to control the menace.
What is going to work in such a scenario is the differential treatment of the content, as it is happening with the new breed of directors.
The leak is out, differentiator is in, and it is manifest from the recent successes of the movies like LUCK BY CHANCE, DEV D, etc.
Need of the hour is democratization of the business of film making, allowing more and more new entrants, and giving due respect to the writers, as they would only be the catalytic factor in bucking the trend. What would be the underlining theme would be, ''It is different''. As they say in pharmaceutical parlance, the need of the hour is to introduce the biomarkers, in all forms of filmmaking. The job of biomarkers is to find out whether the disease has just set in, or has taken root. This kind of biomarker needs to be put in place in film industry in India if it has to survive and prosper.
