While one does not negate the role LUCK plays in the life of an individual, it seems to play a role of paramount importance in the film industry. Seldom does a year go by when a film does no release which does not have the nomenclature LUCK in its name.
It all had started with one of the super hit films of the industry, and the first film that brought up the role of anti-hero as the revered figure in the industry, the film being KISMAT which established Dada Muni aka Kishore Kumar as one of the most successful stars that film industry ever produced. Underlining fact was that the film KISMAT also finds reference in all the lists of super hit films that have ever been produced in the film industry.
The other super hit film that had LUCK in its name was KAHANI KISMAT KI, which was one of the all time super hit films of Dharmendra. The inclusion of LUCK in the title seems to be a manifestation more to counter the element of uncertainty associated with the quotient of acceptance of the film among the public. So we have films by the name TAQDEER and TAQDEER KA BADSHAH, but these films were not that successful at the box office. As a mater of fact within a decade two films with the title TAQDEER were released one in 1953 named TAQDEER and another one was released once again by the same name in 1967. TAQDEER was the title of the film once again in 1983.
In the recent past i.e. during the last five years, the name LUCK in any form has found quite a lot of manifestation in the form of a title of the film. So we had LUCKY starring Salman Khan and Sneha, then we had LUCK BY CHANCE that was lucky for Zoya Hassan and Farhan Akhtar. For Abhay Deol, like his uncle LUCK proved to be a hit when his film OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE became a super hit and catapulted him into a different category.
Fascination with using the title KISMAT as it was a super hit film continued to find expression in the film KISMAT KONNECTION but unfortunately it could not make a connection with the box office and the disconnect was too much apparent.
It therefore seems to be rather a mix bag as far as using LUCK in any form either in English, Hindi or Urdu in the title.
With this being the background, it would be interesting to se whether LUCK would turn the TAQDEER of the filmmakers and bring about a positive influence on their LCUK? Watch this space!
