Michael Jackson: An era of gravity defying dance comes to a sad end

Today when he breathed his last, Michael Jackson has left his fans devastated all across the world. He was the man who was able to unite the fans of pop music and dance from all across the globe through his revolutionary albums. Before the albums of Michael Jackson made their debut, pop music more was to listen to, but he was the first singer who also used to choreograph it himself and became an iconic leader in setting a new trend of dance, the movements characterized by gravity defying movements. He was the man who invented the moonwalk and though quite a lot of clones tried to emulate him none could even come any way near him.

He was a great influence on the Hindi film industry as well. It was in 1983 when Subhash Ghai's MERI JUNG was released, and Javed Jaffrey set the screen on fire with the song ''Rock and Roll''. It had happened for the first time that a character actor could create such an impact as he gave the Indian audience the magic of break dance and a trend of break dance began in India. He was one of the first followers of Michael Jackson in Hindi cinema and Javed Jaffrey did indeed accede to it in one of the programs of dance that he anchors on Sony Television.

After Javed Jaffrey the worthy follower of Michael Jackson was Prabhu Deva and he was also one actor who changed the dynamics of dance in Tamil industry with KADALAN that was dubbed in Hindi as well. Movements of Prabhu Deva set the break dance to the music of A. R. Rahman that captivated the imagination of the Indian audience as well. Prabhu Deva did an encore of the break dance movement in Boney Kapoor's PUKAR; the song was ''Que sera sera'. Incidentally, when Sanjay Dutt decided that he had enough and he would like to undergo a change of image, it was Michael Jackson whose movements served the inspiration for him. The film was THANEDAR, song ''Tama Tama Loge'', and Madhuri Dixit accompanied her as a co-star.

Subsequently Prabhu Deva became a choreographer but the movements of Michael Jackson that made Prabhu Deva a dancing star, continued to find expression in his choreographic works. So Prabhu Deva when he directed Hrithik Roshan in LAKSHYA gave him a taste of the break dance of Michael Jackson in the song'' main Aisa Kyoon Hoon'', which again swept the audience of their feet. Prabhu Deva indeed would be indebted to Michael Jackson all through his life as he got the National Award for this song, and he won the Filmfare Award for this song in the same year. Hrithik also demonstrated that he was no mean dancer when he performed the moonwalk with such panache with such consummate ease.

Javed Jaffrey moved on to television and started anchoring dance shows and in one of the episodes where he invited Prabhu Deva they literally set the stage on fire with their amazing dance movements. May be, after Michael Jackson's sad demise somebody from the industry would wake up to the possibility of casting these two worthy followers of Michael Jackson again and tell the world what a phenomenon Jackson was. May his soul rest in peace and his spirit set the stage in heaven on fire with his moonwalk!
