Even the manner, in which the awards have stacked up, at the 54th Idea Filmfare Awards 2008, is a clear emphasis of the fact that India as a country is aspiring to be modern, but its moorings are firmly grounded in the historical reality. So we have JODHAA AKBAR at the end of one spectrum, and the other end is ROCK ON, which is a modern film, as modern as one can get and has indeed led to revival of the spirit of rock music in the country. ROCK ON is also a cinematic ode to the latent talent that should not be allowed to die, while JODHAA AKBAR's success is a pointer to the fact that we as a nation are proud about our historical figures, and lap it up through awards as also accolades.
In between the award being given to Priyanka Chopra as the best female actor is also a pointer to the fact that the awards are recognizing the success stories expressed through cinematic interpretation about aspirations of a small town girl, who has a dream in her eyes and can achieve what ever she has aspired for.
In the music category it is Rahman who again has emphasized that he is indeed a master of sound and nuances and therefore the award has gone to him for JAANE TU YA JAANE NA, instead of JODHAA AKBAR, though both the films were nominated. It again is a pointer to the fact that the youth of the country is inclined and more receptive to modern sounds than traditional echoes and the Indian music that is catching the attention of the world in the modern times is more owing to the increasing adoption of western sounds, but expanding their scope in terms of the octaves and arranging it in the Indian milieu. Would somebody be able to displace Rahman from this category would be a difficult proposition to say, as he has already scored one brilliant hit for the year 2009 in DELHI 6.
As far as the award for best actor is concerned, Hrithik Roshan being awarded the same, is it an indication of his coming of the age as an actor as he was pitted against two other Khans Shah Rukh and Aamir. May be, and KITES getting released this year would add to his international reputation as well.
All in all, the 2008 awards in themselves are also indicative of the fact that a new era of filmmaking is slowing but firmly carving its own place in the sun.
