It seems that the suggestion of the government to cut out smoking scenes from the films has given a new lease of life to pan as an accompaniment of character in the films. In GULAAL the song, "Beeda Duji Thali kaa' is a subtle ode to the importance Pan or the beetle leaf has in the human life. It also has suggestive connotations in the sense that when a pan is in somebody else's plate the quotient of temptation and the desire to try to have it is a temptation that is difficult to resist. For Rekha Bhardwaj, it is a journey which has come back full circle, from "beedi to paan", both being the necessary accompaniment of the laity in the country. Now that it has again got a new lease of life, it would be indeed an opportune moment to trace out the journey of pan through the Hindi films.
The song PAAN KHAYE SAIYAAN HAMMAR from this film was indeed a lyrical ode to the beauty of paan in the Indian society and it was left to a person from the Hindi heart land Shailendra to write an elegy on the beauty of paan and it became the leis motif of this humble leaf.
