Off-late films that are being released are coming out with one fashion statement or the other and WAKE UP SID is no exception. The difference in WAKE UP SID however lies in the fact that it has focused upon one of the most ignored accessories of Men's Fashion, Socks. The Tom and Jerry pair of Socks that Ranbir Kapoor has been sporting in WAKE UP SID is probably the first such attempt in the Indian film industry where it has been given due attention and focus. The moot point however is whether by this attempt whether socks would also get the due recognition in the fashion ensemble of the Indian male?
Ravi Bajaj the famous fashion designer had tried to create a consciousness about the socks when he had set up his boutique, but it had come cropper as the preference for a brand of socks was not to be found in the Indian psyche at all. Can WAKE UP SID change the trend?
Indian fashion so far has been characterized by expression of preference of fashion items of the variety of garments that have a quotient of visibility and not otherwise, more so in the case of male. Never has a case been made for it even in a suggestive manner about the special brands being used by the characters that are not visible, before WAKE UP SID. Contrast this with highlighting of facts of such kinds in Hollywood films. One example from UNTOUCHABLES would illustrate it. AL Capone's character in the film used to wear silk underwear and it was widely publicized. John Travolta's characters that he portrays on the screen go a large length to address the issue and they are advertised as well. But in case of Hindi films, it is seldom advertised, more so if it is the lead character who is doing it.
Could it be owing to the fact that in most of the cases the lead characters did not generally portrayed the roles which had an awareness of fashion written on to it, so these things were never given any importance whatsoever. It is altogether a different matter that villains had used it as their leitmotif, and Ajit was a living testimony to this trend. He used to sport socks having shades of black and white in bands, and it was more so apparent in the films with mystery as a theme. Even after Michael Jackson popularized the socks, surprisingly enough it was not copied to the extent his other mannerisms were copied in the Hindi cinema.
May be WAKE UP SID could change the trend and socks would also become one of the accessories to be displayed on the screen, as the under wears have become. If it happens credit would indeed be due with WAKE UP SID.
