A remarkable trend has been observed in the world of Hindi cinema whereby films having the extant airports as the background and it becomes a hit film. May be the extant expanse of the airport provides the stimulus and the awe that it inspires and the manner in which it weaves the narrative is the catalysis. MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA is another film of this genre where the situational turns happen at the airport and provide the continuum for the story.
For a change, Salman Khan returns to romance as a suave lover boy and Kareena Kapoor forms the lady interest. MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA also is an attempt to have a re-look at the notion of extramarital affair in the present context. The other angle of this triangle is played by Sohail Khan. The airport that has been used as the backdrop in MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA is the Melbourne airport where large part of the film has been shot. MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA could also be another film where two songs of the film have the opening lines in Hindi film, 'Don't say Alvida' and 'Happening, I am happening'. For the first time Bhappi Lahiri is also playing a small cameo in the film.
The first film of the romantic genre which had airport as the background and became super duper hit was AASHIQUI and it set the bandwagon rolling for situating films at the airports. Interestingly enough, it is not that only Hindi films off late have been using airports as the background, Hollywood has been using it quite successfully for quite a long time.
The last film where the whole narrative of the film was built up around airport was JAANE TU YA JAANE NA. Salman Khan interestingly enough had earlier super hit film to his credit where airport was the background again, film being MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA, and Sohail Khan had also played a cameo in the film. While Shah Rukh Khan's ANJAAM was another film where the story of the film started from an airport. In the similar manner, PYAAR TOH HONA HI THA starring Ajay Devgan and Kajol had its opening and climax set in the backdrop of the airport itself.
Airports have emerged as an interesting backdrop owing probably to the element of anonymity that they enshrine in themselves, baggage of the passengers, baggage of the soul, etc., and the mood of contemplation and introspection that is provided by the cold chrome facade of the present day airports. May be, the paradigm shift in conduct of relationships, on account of flights emerging as major mode of travel is what is prompting their usage as backdrops for the film. MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA could provide catalysis for an action film situated in airport, as underwater is going to be explored by BLUE in a big way, and this is what is lacking from the Hindi films genre.
