We all have a sense of latent fear lurking in our minds, and PHOONK-2, Ram Gopal Verma's latest film, tries to exploit this sense of fear and scare the wits out of our existence. It is more of a situational fear a fact associated with scare that is the dominating theme of PHOONK -2.

While the purists may scoff that through PHOONK-2 Ram Gopal Verma may try to spread the notion of fear among the atheists and the non-believers the situation if it pans out in such a manner that it could shake the faith in self, as it is being proclaimed by the producer and director of the film, then it could become a cult film in the genre of scary films that have been made in India.

After a really long time, Ram Gopal Verma is not directing a film, but has asked the writer of PHOONK-2, Milind Gadagkar, to direct it, as he was floored by the clarity of expression that Milind Gadagkar infused into the script. Ram Gopal Verma is also making PHOONK-2 in two other languages. In Tamil it would be named as BOMMAI and in Telugu it is going to be called AAVAHAM meaning "The Possession". The whole idea behind making PHOONK-2 is to scare the wits out of the audience.

It is also one of the apparent paradoxes of the Indian milieu, or does it belong to all the cultures, that an element of fear is ingrained in our psyche from the tender growing age. Some of us grow out of it, but most of us have this lurking fear at the sub-conscious level even while we grow old. It is this sub-conscious fear, which is being exploited through PHOONK-2.

The plot of PHOONK-2 revolves around a family that is caught in the vortex of the spirits, death and plunder. The element of scare manifests around certain places and it continues to maintain the legacy across the generations, and from this perspective, PHOONK-2 follows into the same genre. If one were to glance back into the movies of the past like WOH KAUN THI, GUMNAM etc., all the element of scare was associated with a place, but the difference was in the fact that an individual was being targeted through that place. In PHOONK-2, it is the whole family that is doomed into the specter of the macabre.

Would Ram Gopal Verma be able to break the jinx and stamp his authority on the box office through PHOONK-2? Let's hope he does.
