While the jury may still be out as to whether the attire that Deepika Padukone displayed in LAFANGEY PARINDEY is indeed in sync with the ground reality for a physically challenged girl, one thing is for sure that the manner in which she has displayed the role of a blind girl in the film could indeed be one of the most successful milestones in her career. Deepika Padukone has gone ahead of the stereotypes in portraying the character in LAFANGEY PARINDEY and has given a new role model to aspire for in the same manner as Al Pacino in SCENT OF A WOMAN. Al Pacino in SCENT OF THE WOMAN was most of the times shown in white attire or in business suits but nobody had questioned how he was portrayed as so prim and proper. Cinema after all as a medium of entertainment is allowed to take such liberties and criticism of LAFANGEY PARINDEY is unwarranted on this count.
It is after a long-long time that Hindi cinema has etched out a character that though physically challenged tries in her own way to live a very normal life, and indeed that should be the way forward, more so pertaining for the modern generation wherein there might be few persons who could have the disabilities in one form or the other, but they continue to persevere nonetheless, without relying on the crutches of sympathy rather demanding empathy.
While one may not encounter the tapori language that indeed has its own flavor in the modern times in Mumbai, as it has acquired the cosmopolitan ethos, Hindi cinema continues to provide one flavor or the other of such kind, LAFANGEY PARINDEY, being the recent addition, that underscores the need for preservation of such kind of a lingo. Indeed it is these colloquial and earthy flavors that expand the outreach of the cinema, taking it beyond the sanitized urban neo-riche existence, as it was done with panache in PEEPLI LIVE and now in LAFANGEY PARINDEY. Incidentally, one of the original brand ambassadors of the Mumbai tapori language, Jackie Shroff, still tries to underline its importance through his various avatars and appearance in various television channel programmes.
LAFANGEY PARINDEY is celebration of youth and though it might have drawn influence from GHULAMI for Pradeep Sarkar the director of the movie it indeed is a monumental step forward as he has moved away from period films to focus on the aims and aspirations of the youth of present times.
