As the year is coming to a close today, one of the most important underlining motifs that really could be a tipping point for the film industry is the migration of scores of film stars on to the bandwagon of television. Shah Rukh Khan who did not have an appearance in television is set to re-launch his television career once again with another reality show. Indeed, be it Big B, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, or Salman Khan, all the stars flirted with television, and now even Hrithik Roshan is slated to take the bow in television, may be spurred by the failure of GUZAARISH at the box office.

All the stars that made their debut on the television chose the reality show as the channel vehicle. None of the film stars chose to be a part of the television programmes through a serial or any other show. May be the idea of being a part of the reality show was spurred by the success that Big B had achieved when he made his debut with Kaun Banega Crorepati and each star thence is chasing that illusive mirage.

Akhsay Kumar in sync with his image of being an action star, and originally being a person associated with food industry decided to test waters this year with a reality cookery show.

The reality television shows however are not that sacred a cow that could reap moolah, as they were earlier. Now to increase the TRP ratings, marriages are being conducted on the shows, even famous stars like Pamela Anderson have been imported into Big Boss to increase the TRP ratings, but the zing does not exist in the same intensity as it did during the heydays of KBC-I. With each channel having a reality show and each one of them clashing for the eyeballs with other channels, the reality shows have turned out to be white elephants in most of the cases. It is manifest from the fact that the life span of most of the reality shows during the current year was not of the same duration as it used to be earlier. Besides, during the current year most of the reality shows were used as a platform for launch of other programmes be it a new serial or a new film, or a new star, it all was being promoted through the reality shows and the hosts had to play along to promote the product. One could say that during the current year, i.e. 2010, the reality shows were used in a big way for surrogate advertisements, and brand positioning. So we had one of the biggest recluses of the industry, Dharmendra also appearing in one of the penultimate episodes of KBC-IV to promote his film YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA.

This being the new benchmark for the reality shows, it would be interesting to watch out the shows of Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan when they make their debuts sometimes in 2011. Watch out this column and Happy New Year to all the readers.
